30 Day Knitting Challenge Day 5: How long did it take from the time your learned how to knit, to finish your first project?
I have no idea how long it took me to finish my first knitting project. Knowing 6 or 7 year old me, I focused on it intensely for a time – a few weekends? – and then “finished” it before it was really done so I could knit with my Mom’s alluring big needles. (I wrote all about those needles yesterday.)
When I started knitting again in 1999 or 2000 (probably 2000), I’m pretty sure I was sucked in and finished my first project within a few days of starting it. At the time, I was in the midst of a bout with major depression, which had kicked off as postpartum depression in 1999. I was also frustrated with work and where I was in general with my life, so I started knitting to do something for me, knitting as self-care. And it helped! But knitting alone didn’t pull me out of depression; therapy and medication probably had a larger hand in that. I’m veering into TMI territory, sort of and feel this animated gif is an appropriate sarcastic comment on this post.
Isn’t it amazing how much knitting changes our lives? It’s definitely my stress relief and has helped me through a lot of grief. I know it’s kind of hokey to say, but it soothes my soul.

It soothes my soul too! Maybe hokey, but definitely true.
