While I was knitting …

I didn’t knit as much as usual last week, instead I crocheted Jeff a sweet cat cave. I caught up with and finished this season of Legion and was thoroughly entertained, helped along quite a bit by the appearances of a very groovy Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords fame) and the – I guess – production/feel of the show, which I’ve mentioned before.

I’ve also been watching Feud: Bette and Joan, which is about the relationship between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford before, during, and after the making of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange star in the show and are fabulous. It’s really nice to see older women cast and starring as older women facing issues specific to older women in Hollywood and in general, even if the show is basically about the awful ways that we can (and do) treat each other.

This week, I also turned the TV off and started listening to a new podcast, S-town. The show is “about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it.” S-town comes out of Serial Productions, from Serial and This American Life, two other podcasts I’ve listened to and recommend. I’m only two episodes into S-town and already things have taken an unexpected and incredibly compelling and fascinating turn. In addition to listening, go to the S-town website; it’s beautifully done.

Well done but not exactly beautiful, I leave you with this gif of Bette Davis freshening her Baby Jane makeup. Happy Tuesday!

  1. When you finish S-Town, post about it! I very much would like to hear further thoughts from listeners about this podcast. I have so many thoughts on it, and it’s interesting to hear how other people felt after it was done. It IS certainly a compelling podcast.

    1. I just finished it and really, really liked it, so much that I’ll probably listen to the whole thing again. I wish it had a warning that it deals with depression and suicide. It got me thinking about The Big Issues, like the meaning of life, how we impact the world & how the world impacts us, what John’s legacy is but also what I’d want mine to be (and it wouldn’t include suicide). I think John’s deepening depression & the “church” sessions with Tyler were a combo of circumstances, being (likely) a genius, and mercury poisoning (the hubris of fire gilding!!!). In the end, I feel bad for him and everyone close to him, esp. Mary Grace and Tyler.

      1. You know, I asked a good friend what he thought, as he’d recommended it to me. He said “Entertaining but forgettable.” And I was SHOCKED! Because, I found it quite the opposite. Maybe some entertainment, but also shocking/disturbing and unforgettable. I can’t stop thinking about it. The spiral, the demise, the inability or disinterest in getting help, what seemed like the lack of resources in a small town for help. The whole being different in a small town bit struck me as well, that’s a feeling I know well, even though I live in a city now. But the question of “Was this a life well lived?” And “How do I define a life well lived for myself” questions really were the best part of it. It was one of those mediums for entertainment that was tragic and beautiful all at once.

      2. Yes! All of that! I can’t believe your friend found it forgettable as well – I can’t stop thinking about it (or really John) either, and can’t stop relating my own life to the big questions it raises. Perhaps in the end that’s John’s legacy? Although, isn’t that everyone’s legacy? I’ve thought about these things before, mainly when loved ones have died.

  2. Will do, assuming I can do it without being too spoilery. Although a spoiler warning would cover me … Now I’m looking forward even more to listening to more of it!

  3. My husband and I are watching the Feud: Bette and Joan series too. We have finished the episode where they finished the movie, so we are behind a bit. If it were up to me, I would speed it up…but he’s interested too.

I will have to check out that podcast. My book club is listening to a podcast this time around instead of reading a book. The podcast is a lot of fun and I’m anxious to listen to the second season. It’s called Wooden Overcoats. Have you heard of it? If not, and you enjoy storytelling podcasts, it’s awesome! Here’s the website: http://www.woodenovercoats.com/ I listen to it on iTunes.

    1. Now that I think about it, the pacing of Feud is a bit slow or off in some way, but I’ll still take it! Wooden Overcoats sounds interesting! I’ll have to check it out! Thank you!
