NaPoWriMo 3: On Waking

On Waking

The wren’s insistent calls to his mate just outside our window
The door closing, clicking in the latch
Dogs barking at seemingly nothing in their quest to be useful
Dishes being put away, plates stacking loudly against each other
The front door being slammed shut as they hurry for to the bus
The loud hum and thud of the garage door
The sound of the shower being turned on
Your snoring and my own, and not breathing – apnea
Nested nightmares, like starting at the center matryoshka,
each one holding another, until finally: I am awake,
like saving myself from suffocating, exhausted but alive

Very good! I like that ‘nested nightmares’ line immensely!

    1. Oh, thank you! That’s my favorite too!

  2. I also loved ‘door closing, clicking in the latch’. The quiet domestic creepiness of it. I was reminded of Yeats’ second coming.
