Where fiber art, inspiration, and words meet.

The Week Feb 13-20

It’s been a while since I set goals and tracked them; I haven’t done it since December 2016. It’s time to get back on track and do this again.

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

Yeah. I’m not going back to review December goals, partly because it’s been so long and partly because I got carried away with a list of all the things I wish I could get done and instead overwhelmed myself into not doing most of them. May I learn from my mistake.

This week:

  • Finish 3 more sets of decreases on the arms for The Green Wood Cardigan (that’s knit 24 more rows) and measure to see if I need to knit more or can start the ribbing for the cuff.
  • Make 2 more wedges in my Aranami shawl.
  • Walk the dog once. (I was supposed to start walking him in December to help him strengthen muscles, which should help with his hip pain, but he’ll be 12 this year and we’re not in the habit of walking the dogs. I’ve been resisting starting because he’s terrible on the leash.)
  • Go to tae kwon do twice. (I don’t think I told you guys: I started tae kwon do. My husband is a black belt and my 3 boys are all 2nd degree black belts, and I finally started at the same school they go to after years of gentle pressure from the grand master. I feel great after I get there and class starts, it’s the getting there & before the start that I dread. I’m kind of a shut-in, as you may have surmised.)

And because I can’t end the post on that note, I will end it with this from one of my favorite poets.

    1. Exercise! Self defense! Kick assed-ness without the risk of derby! Hurray!

  1. I love lists and yours are always a bit epic! As for martial arts–go!! Have fun!! I did Hwar Do for about 10 years and worked up to a 3rd degree blackbelt. I’m pretty introverted as well, but there was something about that community that I loved (I went with my dad and brother and made some lifelong friends). I do miss it, but for grad school and then work I had to move away from our school 🙁 My dad still runs a school in Ithaca, NY and it’s so lovely to see that our family continued on in the sport. I would love to hear your updates about class and the sweater you’re working on!

    1. The tae kwon do school is definitely a community that we’re a part of; one of the neat things about finally starting is that lots of people know my kids and husband, so I’m “___ mom!” or “Coach Ky’s wife!” I’m sure I’ll be writing more about class and there will definitely be more sweater updates – I can’t wait to finish it, but to finish it I actually have to work on it, and the exciting part (the yoke) was the first thing I finished. But I’m so close now – just a few more inches, I think, and then I can tackle seaming.

Ohhh, thank you for the Merwin poem! He is absolutely one of my favorites as well. So excited for you about the tae kwon do. Can’t wait to hear how things progress! 🙂

    1. Thank you! I love Merwin also; I need to get his collected poems (or at least borrow them from the library). I’ll definitely keep posting about TKD! 🙂

  3. Love the idea of goals! And well done on starting tae kwon do! 🙂

    1. Thank you and thank you! Goals are a good thing unless I get too carried away, like I did in November & December (you can see posts from then by searching Little Golden Notebook for “The Week”); I need to keep them realistic.

      1. Ha ha, I agree – small, achievable goals always work better for me too
